Explore the musical magnificence of Joni Mitchell.      Joni Mitchell evolved from the smooth jazz-pop of Court and Spark to Hissing of Summer Lawns, one of her most adventurous albums.      For many, the soft and crystal-clear voice of Joni Mitchell at the beginning of her career will remain indelible in their memory. The innovative style of her peaceful, folk guitar music caught the attention of David Crosby, member of the highly popular band Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and in 1968 he produced her very first album. Only three years later she became inspired by the cool flow of modern jazz and set off on new musical paths. The Hissing of Summer Lawns represents a great leap away from the folk scene. Even the very first number, "In France They Kiss On Main Street" stands out thanks to its surprisingly unconventional melodic writing.
Is The Hissing of Summer Lawns a better album than Blue? Probably not, but it's more head-spinning, more breathtaking. Mitchell was diving into her experimental phase, flirting with jazz cadences, Latin rhythms, exotic harmonies, oblique poetry, and this first dive mined the richest treasures. (Hejira, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, and Mingus would follow.) It triggered enormous controversy at the time. Rolling Stone gave it two reviews - one 4-star, the other 1-star. Prince called it his favorite Joni Mitchell album, and that sums it up.
