This handsome and rare 10” LP from Mezhdunarodnaya Kniga · MK (D-4264/5, Russian pressing, yellow MK stereo label, mono) features a masterly performance of Prokofiev’s Violin Sonata No. 1 in F minor Op. 80 by violinist Joyce Flissler and pianist Harriet Wingreen, recorded in Moscow, made in the wake of the former’s 7th place finish, against a remarkable field, in the 1958 Tchaikovsky Competition (Valeri Klimov was awarded First Prize).
One can only lament the fact that Flissler made so regrettably few recordings. This is a reading of the Prokofiev to rival Oistrakh, among others, in its unflinching intensity and technical aplomb – powerful playing by any measure.
Flissler studied with Reuven Heifetz, father of Jascha, as well as with Edouard Déthier at the Juilliard School in New York. Another of her few recordings, and very much worth seeking out – is devoted to the Violin Sonata No. 2 of Quincy Porter.
The reverse side of the jacket carries a brief biography of Flissler, printed in both Russian and English. The striking cover art is uncredited.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD+. There is light edgewear, mild discoloration, and a small bit of writing to the rear panel. However, there are no seamsplits, owners' markings or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Though there is light surface noise throughout, in general the playback remains quite fine. However, those wanting a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
