Description

Original 1974 pressing of Chapter Two: Nia by JuJu on the legendary Strata-East label (SES-7420).

This is a powerful spiritual jazz recording arranged and produced by Plunky Nkabinde, featuring extended modal explorations and deep Afrocentric themes. Strata-East releases from this era are among the most sought-after independent jazz records, prized for both their musical depth and limited original pressings.

The album includes standout tracks such as “Black Unity” (a Pharoah Sanders composition), “The End of the Butterfly King,” and the epic title piece “Nia.” The record captures the spiritual jazz movement at full strength with long improvisations, layered percussion, and a deep cosmic atmosphere that collectors of Strata-East, Black Jazz, and Tribe Records gravitate toward.

The vinyl is VG++ and closer to Excellent. It retains beautiful high gloss and appears extremely well preserved. The record has been play tested on a Micro Seiki DDX-1000 turntable with Sorane SA 1.2 tonearm and Denon DL-103R moving coil cartridge and plays wonderfully. Sound quality is strong and clear with only the slightest bit of faint crackle between tracks that is barely noticeable during playback.

The record has also been cleaned on a VPI record cleaning machine.

The jacket is VG condition with noticeable edge and corner wear along with some moisture staining visible on the back cover. The top and bottom seams each have a small separation near the center area, but the sleeve remains structurally intact and displays well overall.

The record will ship outside the jacket in a Mobile Fidelity inner sleeve, with the jacket protected inside a poly outer sleeve to prevent seam splits during transit.

A fantastic original copy of a highly respected spiritual jazz title from the Strata-East catalog, increasingly difficult to find with such a clean playing surface.
