This beautiful LP from Columbia Masterworks (ML 4843, US pressing, gray 6eye label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features one of the finest entries in the label's wonderful "Modern American Music Series", that pairing Leon Kirchner’s String Quartet No. 1 with Irving Fine’s String Quartet (1952).

The former is performed by the American Arts Quartet and was recorded at Radio Recorders Studios, Hollywood, CA, on 15 July 1952. The American Arts Quartet was comprised of Eudice Shaprio (1st violin), Robert J. Shushel (2nd violin), Virginia Majewski (viola), and Victor Gottlieb (cello).

The latter is performed by the Juilliard String Quartet and was recorded at Columbia 30th Street Studio, New York, City, on 20 May 1953. At this time the Juilliards were comprised of Robert Mann (1st violin), Robert Kaff (2nd violin), Raphael Hillyer (viola), and Arthur Winograd (cello).

It was laudable of Columbia to undertake such a project, taping many of that era's finest American composers and one hopes Sony Classical will one day restore the series in full, including also the original cover art (here executed by Malta), which was invariably eye-catching. There are informative liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is minor corner wear, but really that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, or owners' markings, and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, an outstanding collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
