Extremely RARE ORIGINAL 1970 FIRST UK PRESSING (A1/B1 Matrix) Stereo LP

Kaleidoscope - "Bernice" - CBS S 64005. Rare original 1970 UK first pressing (A1/B1 matrix) stereo vinyl LP released on the dark Orange CBS record label with front laminated cover, matt finish on rear, and complete with original CBS advertising inner sleeve.

Here is a fabulous ORIGINAL 1970 UK THICK HEAVY VINYL 1st PRESSING LP featuring 10-tracks of eclectic west coast psychedelia by the pioneering late 60's American band Kaleidoscope. Added 'American' prefix to this release to avoid confusion with the UK psych outfit of the same name. Up for grabs here is a very rare UK (Made In England) original issue of the 4th and final original LP released by this legendary and hugely influential in some circles (Jimmy Page named them as his favourite band of all time) 60's band. The record and cover are both in excellent condition. A really lovely original UK copy of a rare US psych release.

Kaleidoscope were arguably the most eclectic band of the psychedelic era, weaving together folk, blues, Middle Eastern, and acid more often and seamlessly than any other musicians. Influenced by Turkish, middle Eastern and ethnic American music, they made some of the best psychedelic music to be released in the states. The California group were formed under the nucleus of multi-instrumentalists David Lindley and Chris Darrow in the mid-'60s. Adding fiddle, banjo, and various exotic string instruments such as the oud and saz to the traditional rock lineup, Kaleidoscope complemented their experimental sounds with taut and witty (if lyrically eccentric) songwriting. Other important members were Solomon Feldthouse, who specialized in the Turkish-style instruments, and Chester Crill, who, to make documentation just that much more difficult, sometimes used odd pseudonyms like Fenrus Epp.

Kaleidoscope were a popular and devastating live act, even incorporating some flamenco and belly dancers into their performances! But in commercial terms their very eclecticism probably worked against them. Hit singles, too, were a difficult proposition for such a versatile group to get to grips with, although several of their 45s were pretty good. One of the best, "Nobody," was a most unusual fusion of R&B and psychedelia that found the group backing veteran rock and blues greats Larry Williams and Johnny "Guitar" Watson.

Kaleidoscope's eclecticism may have been a by-product of numerous personnel changes throughout the last half of the '60s that would make the construction of a family tree a most unwieldy task. Darrow, in fact, only lasted a couple of albums; in 1970, shortly after 'Bernice', their fourth album, they promptly split up.

On offer here, from my own collection, is a rare original 1970 UK CBS (A1/B1 matrix) very first pressing of Kaleidoscope’s fourth and final album (as a band), Bernice, featuring more pronounced use of electric guitar than their earlier albums, and more bluesy, country influences, but still pretty much 'out there' in overall sound. There were further personnel changes, adding singer-guitarist Jeff Kaplan, and bassist Ron Johnston who replaced Brotman during the making of the album. Feldthouse also left the group.

This rare original first pressing 1970 UK album will be of major interest to psychedelic collectors. A 'must have' for any serious collector of rare vinyl. Low start with no reserve! Don't miss it!

Vinyl: EXCELLENT (Vinyl retains it's original gloss & lustre with only a few feint wispy light marks and hairlines. A lovely original UK CBS heavy vinyl pressing from 1970. The record plays superbly, virtually mint, with vibrant clear crystal sound on playback. It would be hard to find a significantly better playing copy of this rare album.)

Sleeve: EXCELLENT (Lovely glossy lamination on the front, rear has a matt finish, spine is clear and unbroken. Only a few light crinkly creases on the front near the bottom right side, light ringwear on rear, some minor little scuffs near the open out edge. MINT: The record displays barely any signs of use, if any, with no marks or deterioration in sound quality. Extra items and cover are near perfect.

EXCELLENT: Shows only minor signs of being played with very little lessening in sound quality. The Cover and extras will have some light wear and or creasing

VERY GOOD: Has been played many times but has no major deterioration in sound quality, despite some noticeable surface marks and occasional light scratches. Cover and extras will have normal wear and tear but no major defects

GOOD: Has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and any extras may suffer from folding, scuffing, split spine, discoloration etc.

FAIR: The record is still just playable and has considerable surface noise and may even jump. Cover and contents will be torn stained and/or defaced.

POOR: The record will not play properly. Covers badly damaged or partly missing

+ or - : Indicates slightly better (+) or slightly lesser (-) condition than main grade

Packing Procedures: All LPs are securely and well packed in top quality material to avoid any unnecessary damage during transit. When posted the records are removed from the cover, if possible, and placed in a PVC outer protective sleeve to prevent sleeve splits in the post. I use brand new mailers, either the envelope style with thick stiffeners to prevent any sleeve bends in transit, or the "cruciform" style that wrap around the LP. I aim to dispatch all items within 48 hours of receiving payment. It is recommended that you choose the insurance option for higher value items. As stated above I cannot be held responsible for any item(s) lost or damaged in the post that are not shipped via insured / registered mail. I always obtain a certificate proof of posting receipt for every item sent, which will complete our transaction.
