Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive. Spindle marks on side one are very few, light and faint. Side two are nearer moderate in number but still fine and faint.

Cat Number: TL 5448.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 141 grams. A very good solid weight for this record.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Very Rare: and this using the term ‘rare’ correctly. This album is regarded as one of the best and most important within the psychedelic rock era. Massively sort after and hugely collectable – it’s simply one of the greatest, almost ‘lost’ UK albums of the entire 1960s. Highly regarded, but selling in very small numbers and elusive in both mono and stereo. Of the tiny few monos that surface, most are trashed or heavily played at least. For those few who did buy this record, most played it to destruction. This is a lovely copy, one or two minor blemishes and the cover has aged a little. All is described further down, but for sure, this is a very strong example and one of the rarest albums I have offered on Ebay for some time.

Brief Info: Kaleidoscope were a short-lived late 60s psychedelic band, NOT to be confused with the American band of the same name. They made just two albums, both on Fontana, both failed to sell and are equally rare and hugely sort-after. They changed their name to Fairfield Parlour and made one album on the Vertigo spiral label. This often classed as progressive, but their sound had changed little from the previous two. Real psychedelic pop-rock, this album is a pure classic with infectious songs about every day life and people. It’s failure to sell was a real shame for a wonderful band that deserved far greater success than they ever achieved. Within the pop-psych genre, this is regarded as one of the very best albums ever made and it’s status for collectors grows ever stronger as so are ever seen or offered. This a very rare mono and a great opportunity to own it.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD(++): a single unlaminated format with matt surfaces. The back has three external flipbacks and this the TL mono sleeve. Printed and made in England.

Cover Front: Firstly, this is a very fragile and hugely wear-prone cover. A real shame is was never laminated. The front is lovely with incredible rich colour and a high degree of freshness. The main issue is a fairly small manufacture flaw. On the blue-ringed fingers near the bottom edge towards the left, there is a magenta ink splash. Hardly major but present nonetheless. I am almost certain that is what it is. The colour is not red, but magenta – a printer’s process colour used on the printing plates. There are a few small traces on the back cover as well which reinforces this strong theory. With close examination, a few tiny black spots are also seen but these are very minor indeed. Such printing blemishes are hardly uncommon and having been in the print trade for over 35 years, I have seen them many times. There are a few lightish surface creases but these show little against the vivid blast of colour from this classic psych artwork. Under light, a small light dull near the top right corner from a carefully removed price sticker but NO tears or surface damage. The lack of ringwear is a big bonus and little really detracts from one of psych’s most elusive and prized fronts. The small ink splash may be an issue for the highly discerning collector, but as these show up so infrequently, sometimes the odd small compromise has to be made.

Cover Back: The back has aged a little with some darkening of the white, mildish grubbiness, odd small stain and small light traces of the same magenta ink. A few spots towards the top right corner and on the bottom flipback – all very small indeed with any other spots even more tiny. Enough to remind this is actually a 44-year-old cover, but considering this is somewhat uncompromising and delicate, this is a fine back overall. A very few fine and light surface creases but minimal rubbing and no ringwear. The three vulnerable flipbacks are solid and undamaged with no lifting or significant creasing. The odd small end burr but little else.

Top Edge: Light to moderate patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edge: Light rubbing, being white, this shows little.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring mild and light. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Quite solid and straight with minimal compression, a few tiny surface chips but not a great deal else. A white spine with minimal traces of rubbing or wear, this album had no text printed on it’s spine.

Corners: All corners have moderate rubbing, again all being white means it has lesser visual impact. Fine shape retainedd with just modest tip erosion on what is quite soft card – all quite typical on ones like this.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very fragile and genuine 1960s psych rarity. Arguably better than my grading, this is still a looker and lacking the major wear similar items attract over the years. The magenta mark on the lower left fingers the most significant issue for the more discerning, but again I state, I am virtually certain this was present from new via manufacture. A little aged, a few blemishes but this beautiful psych cover should please many collectors. And given the rarity, possibly most?

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: this came to me with a polylined inner in the Polydor style. Aged little with barely any creasing and two ultra neat window circles and clear lining. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and by a 44-year-old mono standards, worthy of a still higher visual grade. A super record that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy that appears fairly modestly played on all the evidence with any surface marks few, light and faint. There is a very fine mark on the very edge of the first song with a couple of clicks, on before the music. One small mark on track two with four light clicks and similar on the album’s final song. All on the music very light indeed and incredibly brief. Give the perils such records faced, I consider these very minor indeed and all the positives far outweight any minor negatives. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This major rarity plays mostly above it’s high visual grading with little to fault bar the aforementioned VERY brief and gentle clicks. This super record offers strong, distortion-free sound – this a CRUCIAL factor – all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. No mono noises with the music and vocals sharp, clear and focused. Just a couple of small misdemeanors from the past, but as these were usually played on heavier tracking record players of the era, this beauty has survived relatively unscathed (when put into real context). Most would have seen mono records of this period scratched to oblivion with grubby dulled surfaces – this record is light years from that and totally on the other side of the spectrum – a couple of small and minor needle marks are hardly a disgrace. The run out areas (dead wax) have light bag rash, but this has NOT affected the playing areas and would not affected sound if it had. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played modestly and has been generally well cared for. Records were purchased to be played for entertainment and I make no excuse for the odd blemish to mono record that still offers fantastic sound on my very revealing LP12 – a record not really designed for this equipment – but a real joy when it can perform so well. Little of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – an album I simply adore and my first for many years. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

End Piece: A wonderful almost ‘lost’ psych classic, rarely seen or offered – this is a very fine all-round example. Not perfect, but how many (especially in mono) ever will be? It’s status within the genre is not exaggerated – it’s certainly up there with the likes of Floyd’s ‘Piper’ but way, way more elusive. When one like this does surface, it is likely to cause a fair degree of interest. Not for the perfectionist, but most realistic fans and collectors will treasure it. Many records that did sell poorly often deserved too – but Tangerine Dream was simply not one of them – it’s rarity and quality of music has simply enhanced it’s status as possibly the very best pop-psych album ever. So not miss this one.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
