KARLTON HESTER AND THE CONTEMPORARY JAZZ ART MOVEMENT– same (1981) Hesteria-0001 – Strong VG+/EX (cover/vinyl)

Super cool and scarce private funky spiritual jazz from San Francisco. The group is a large ensemble with some heavy African influences led by flautist Carlton Hester. There is a lot of brass plus piano, bass and drums. Somewhat in the vein of Sun Ra and Horace Tapscott’s larger groups. A great mix of modal and spiritual jazz with some funky grooves too. The songs are “The Jive Cycles Within an Integrated Force-Field,” “Ballad,” “IT’s About Time the Rain Came,” plus the side-long, 20:11-minute “Pan African Ballet Music.” Never see this one!

This is a really nice copy. The cover is solid with only some light ring wear and a 2-inch seam split from the jacket opening in. There’s a little wear on the edges and seams, but nothing significant – just noting it to be completely accurate. The vinyl is clean and glossy and nice with only slight sleeve scuffs that are insignificant. I grade this conservatively: Strong VG+/EX (cover/vinyl).
