Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 117 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Rarity: The title itself shows up fairly often, but finding the earliest pressed copies in top conditions is a far different story. The early pressings with the FULLY laminated cover are far harder to find and try to ever find this cover and record (and inner) better. Most seen are later pressings with an unlaminated cover or even the EMI Fame label. This is a beautiful example and clearly hardly even played.

Brief Info: Discovered by Pink Floyd’s Dave Gilmour, this beautiful debut album made number 3 in the UK charts but failed to sell well in the US where it did not even chart at all. An amazingly original and quite stunning record, Kate’s vocals took a nation by storm via the gorgeous ‘Wuthering Heights’ and this album was justifiably a huge success as was most everything she did afterwards. Certainly not the rarest title I have ever offered, but such a lovely early pressed copy that looks and plays superbly is very special indeed. A solidly pressed record and barely even played, this is a challenging recording with complex grooves for that remarkable vocal – it can wear and damage easily and so often have I heard this album crackle and break-up. This sounds sublime with clear, crisp, distortion-free sound and housed in a beautiful shiny, near immaculate cover that shows-off the gorgeous artwork to perfection – the unlaminated version does even compare – even the inner sleeve is like new too. This is a copy that will be hard to find better and deserves to be heard again soon – as far as debut albums go, this was very special – a Strange Phenomenon indeed!

Cover’s Potential for Wear: Moderate in theory but many seen are dulled and tired-looking. Hard to believe this album is now over 30-years-old, fewer survive looking so fresh with such beautiful shine.

Cover Grade and Format: Mint(-), a single, FULLY laminated format as only the earliest pressings were. Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd.

Lamination, Front & Back: Very clean and super clear with deep glossy shine with barely any traces of any dulling or friction rubs. All fully adhered with no lifting or blisters and any creasing minimal and light. Just one half moon on the front shows to any real degree. Ending slightly short on several edges, just like many of the 60s covers, but little grime-line formation or chipping to fine exposed strips. This laminate looks highly attractive as does the beautiful artwork beneath and both retain an unusual degree of freshness – remember this cover is over 30-years-old – unbelievable but true. Even with scrutiny under angled light, the surface of this laminate is practically devoid of even the ultra-fine surface trace marks and is so clinically supreme, it almost appears sprayed-on and is totally smooth to the touch. This really does look lovely to the eye.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering. Record entered on this right outside edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite thin and fragile, straight with minimal traces of compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: All crisp and neat with lovely sharp shape retained.

Cover Summary: A superb all round example of this famous and beautiful late 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This should please most-all collectors.

The EMI Inner: Practically Mint, as made. and still very white indeed with minimal traces of ageing. Unlined with no creasing of any significance and no splits or tears – the bottom corners are vented in manufacture. Guaranteed original also, it has 12/78 date code.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-), with barely any noteworthy marks or blemishes. The ultimate fine surface trace in daylight being ultra critical but this could pretty much pass for new. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, an incredible intense black and solidly pressed. A copy barely even played, an album I could hardly wait to hear again via the vinyl source and it failed to disappoint. EMI pressings I have found variable over time and even though this looks practically as new, I did hold my breath for a brief time in case the pressing quality let it down. Visually a super record that should please most collectors again.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-) (not really sure why a minus is needed actually). A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please all collectors.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful record plays up to its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. This has strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. I noted no pops or clicks and is a very clean pressing which was very enjoyable to listen too – these are highly variable and this example will take some beating. The odd minuscule surface trace on the odd quiet bit or two, but really, getting a copy of this to play like a CD will prove nigh-on impossible. Clearly well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment, this is an exceptional piece. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy could prove very difficult to find significantly better and should please most all fans of this incredible lady – very strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
