Description
ALCO RECORDS of Los Angeles release # 103-X, two (2) long play LP double-sided discs.
Katharine (Katherine) Hepburn speech at Gilmore Stadium, Los Angeles, May 19 1947
Condition: No cover, discs in area of VG++/EXCELLENT/NM condition (pictures ARE available of all 45 sides, just ask, I haven't
attempted to clean fingerprints etc. for fear I might damage the vinyl, will leave that to the experts like yourselves!), handled but
seemingly lightly played if at all.Presented in conjunction with a speech by Henry Wallace, this is a piece of McCarthyism history
that ultimately led to the blackllisting of numerous Hollywood actors, writers and directors several years later.
There are no references online to these recordings that I can find outside of what may be in museum collections,
much less any copies available for sale on eBay or elsewhere. Here's one distrinct reference to the Hepburn speech:

Un-American Activities 1948: Communist Front Organizations":
"Following the ' ' Forum Series ' ' the Communists launched a public rally at the Gilmore Stadium in Los Angeles,
starring Henry Wallace and Katharine Hepburn. Robert W. Kenny introduced Wallace, who was billed as the principal speaker,
but Katharine Hepburn stole the show. Her subject, of course, was "thought control," and while her speech was probably
written by one of the red writers in the Screen Writers Guild, she spoke the lines well and the comrades gave her an
ovation. Miss Hepburn denounced President Harry S. Truman and his Democratic supporters; the Republican Party;
Attorney General Tom Clark; the House Committee on Un-American Activities; Chairman J. Parnell Thomas; the California Legislature's
Fact-Finding Committee on Un-American Activities; State Senator Jack B. Tenney; the Holly- wood Motion Picture Alliance ;
and others, as responsible for a "plot" to foist "thought control" on the "liberal" and "progressive" people of America.
The affair was held under the auspices of the Communist front, the Progressive Citizens of America. After the Hepburn tirade, no one
was interested in printing Wallace 's speech, but the Progressive Citizens of America boasted that more than three million copies of the
Hepburn proclamation had been printed and distributed, in addition to extensive radio rebroadcasts.
The key ' ' line ' ' was thus established. Through the Communist skill in amalgamation, defense of the Bill of Rights, freedom of the press, radio
and films, is to be identified with the Communist Party 's desperate fight against investigation and exposure."
