This disc presents six excerpts - including a complete side of the Osaka concert - from Keith Jarrett's Sun Bear Concerts, a ten-record set of five solo-concerts performed in Japan in November 1976.
Although each piece on this record, taken out of context, is a vivid example of Keith's performances, we feel that none should be mistaken to be representative of a given concert, or of the Sun Bear Concerts as a whole. The complete side from Osaka, as superb as it is standing alone, is only one part of that concert, like a movement in a sonata or a symphony; likewise, the other sections from the Nagoya, Sapporo and Tokyo concerts are, in a sense, episodes of larger movements. Yet, in each of these pieces, we find valid expressions of Jarrett's musical universe, and we hope that they can be a first step in introducing the music of the Sun Bear Concerts.
