KEITH WEST
"ON A SATURDAY b/w THE KID WAS A KILLER "
on the PARLOPHONE RECORDS cat# R 5713 vintage 1968 ORIGINAL
A rare PSYCH gem - and an obscure release that sold nothing at the time!
Winsome, sensitive delivery from the newly-discovered pop star Keith West, who was finding some hits after his foray into 'Teenage Opera' with Mark Wirtz.
However - this one underlined the swift end of the brief fame and fortune he'd found, finished as quickly as it had started. TOMORROW was already now a thing of his psychedelic past, and his freakbeat period had been replaced in favour of a rock foundation, after the impact of his (still rather decent) novelty hit.
The recording session for this also produced another excellent track 'SHE', but this was not issued beyond the extremely scarce acetate.
Indeed, he was to be graced with an auspicious backing band which included ex-Yardbird JEFF BECK between his groups, and post-Creation RON WOOD too on bass! (as credited on the Tomorrow re-issue CD booklet). (If memory serves... also Aynsley Dunbar on drums too, after playing in Mayall's Bluesbreakers).
Not too shabby, but sadly not to be appreciated by many as this sold nothing!
The 'A' is a lovely record to tell the truth, and more like what he should have been doing than the incomplete and therefore disjointed 'Opera' material. "Grocer Jack" was quality pop, but far removed from what he'd been doing with the band on 'My White Bicycle' and 'Revolution', and nights at the UFO Club.
In this era there were many brilliant rare slices of genius that cropped up, for fleeting moments, but never caught the general public ear - and this is a gem.
