Im November 2009 gab Bloc Party-Frontmann Kele Okereke bekannt, dass er in eigener Sache
an seinem Solo-Debüt arbeitet. Und das, obwohl er, ursprünglich wie seine Band Bloc Party
beabsichtigt hatte, ein Jahr Abstand von der Musik zu nehmen. Er konnte seine kreativen Impulse
jedoch nicht zurückhalten und beschloss, sich für ein paar Probeaufahmen in den EMI Recording
Studios einzubuchen.
"It was just me and an engineer. I plugged in synths that I had no idea what they would do. I
began programming drum beats, which I had never done before. It was completely back to the
drawing board. It was exciting and terrifying. In most cases I sat down, pulled a drum beat out of
nowhere and arranged stuff around that. This was as exciting to me as the first time I picked up
a guitar."
Das Resultat der Proben hört auf den Namen "The Boxer" und umfasst mitreißende 10 Songs,
die Kele zusammen mit dem Produzenten XXXchange von Spank Rock in New York aufgenommen
hat.
