Brief Info: The first solo album from the Uriah Heep member, many consider one of the best. Clearly this will have overtones of his main band as can be seen above, it includes several members of Uriah Heep. A modest seller as the majority of solo albums invariably are. The record looks little used and offers very clean sound throughout. An all-round impressive early example with the Island credits, this will please most collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with smooth, matt surfaces. Printed and made in England by Robor.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: None Apparent.

Cover Front: Superb, and little short of as made. Clean, fresh and attractive with deep unfaded colour and barely any rubbing or creasing. They rarely get much better than this, also this is obviously prone to wear.

Cover Back: Slight rim rubbing only with any arcs mainly fine and faint, this so hard to avoid on darker gatefolds, this is still very impressive and largely as the front.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Immaculate, nothing else to add.

Top Edges: Straight, clean with barely any wear, also flat and flush. A gentle fine rub near the right corner.

Bottom Edges: A little light very patchy rubbing, again straight and flush.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real tucked and folded edge that is straight and barely worn at all. The back entrance outside has a little thickening as seen viewed end-on. The inside that is a fraction shorter in the manufactured trim has none and remains crisp and sharp. Both untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: A superb spine: very solid and robust, clean, straight with no compression. Barely any wear at all and includes the hinge folds. All text perfect and unworn as seen, also well centred.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubs, so hard to avoid of course with very fine shape to excellent shape retained, the spine pair particularly impressive.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this quite unforgiving 1970’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This very attractive item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain quite basic unlined white inner. Some reasonably light creasing and crinkle but clean and still quite fresh. The edges unsplit and solid, this is patented made in Great Britain.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that appears only lightly played. Any surface marks are very fine and faint, mostly as seen critically under bright angled light. No penetrating stylus marks, most whispy and totally harmless. Very clean with fine shine and fairly solidly pressed. A copy that plays superbly well also with barely anything of note to fault and visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality debut solo album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, barely anything at all and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this quite scarce record – any fan of Uriah Heep cannot fail to like this one as well. It will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
