Already making a comfortable living in the world of commercial voice-overs -- you could hear him pitching cars, wine, coffee, and more whenever you turned on the TV or radio -- Ken Nordine felt the need to do something creative for himself, and thus he started the Word Jazz series of records. Each of the tracks here features Nordine speaking over top of a very upbeat jazz backing track provided by the Fred Katz Group, and the combination sounds not unlike a radio announcer performing beat poetry in places...mostly because that's exactly what it is. That would be selling this album short, though, because Nordine proves himself more than capable of providing both the smooth vocal tones as well as the truly twisted creative sense necessary to pull this off: in one piece, Nordine is your guide in a museum dedicated to sounds, and elsewhere he takes you on a tour of his own mind. He also shows off a particularly sharp sense of humor, such as on his opening story (on the origins of the man who says "At the tone, the time is...") and with "My Baby" (in which his baby turns out to be...well, his child). There are a few missteps, though: While the concept of "The Vidiot" is excellent, it's handled a bit awkwardly here (Wayne and Shuster would take another, better approach on their first album); "Roger" is a story that doesn't seem to have much of a point; and listening to Nordine plow through a pile of food on "Hunger Is From" is less appetizing than he probably hoped. Even so, Word Jazz is still an innovative album and definitely worthy of the sequels that followed.

Ken Nordine, the father of Jazz Dada, verbal deconstruction and "Word Jazz", beat rant and nonsensical lyricism, introduces his invention here. One of the most important relics of the Beat Generation and its idiosyncracies. This is a true psychedelic/dada Jazz if ever we’ve heard one -- words can't describe the contents of this album (alas, music can't either…)

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(e)           Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 15:1.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-         Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1 (front side) and 3 (back side)

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
