 SNOOPY'S comment: MOVIN’ AWAY – Kenny Lynch (1967/UK His Master’s Voice) Back in the 60s/70s, singer/songwriter/actor/entertainer Lynch was a familiar face on stage and British television programmes. His music career kicked off with a cover version of Harold Dorman’s hit ‘Mountain Of Love’. He struck it big with another cover in 1962 – a version of ‘Up On The Roof’, a Carole King & Gerry Goffin hit originally recorded by The Drifters. He also had a stint working in the Brill Building in New York writing songs for other artists. ‘Movin’ Away’ was issued in 1967 and was considered a flop at the time. However, the track gained popularity in the Seventies as a Northern/Rare soul track – and benefited from having been memorably covered by reggae singer Ken Boothe in Jamaica in 1968 for Studio 1. Future Jamaican versions included those by Dennis Brown, Dave Morrison and John Holt. Highly collectable nowadays, Kenny’s original HMV single was never released in other territories, making it the only available issue in the world, apart from sneaky bootlegs.
