Rare 2nd UK pressing of the very unique debut LP from Kevin Ayers, an original member of Soft Machine and the first one to jump ship for a promising solo career . . . a Psych/Progressive/Canterbury classic.
"'If these guys want to behave like clowns, let them do it as a troupe!' cogitated Kevin Ayers as he quitted (sic) the Softs. '-As for me, I’m going to put on my own show!', and soon the circus feel of the opening “Joy of a Toy Continued” seems to be there to corroborate the idea, but . . . what comes next will make anyone change his mind; because whereas the Softs embarked on an intellectual, musical challenging and idiosyncratic journey, Ayers did not want the idiosyncrasy to strip his music from the fun element; thus he took what he thought was the best from both fields and created something unique, highly entertaining, lively, rollicking, sarcastic and tender.
Aided by his ex-colleagues Robert Wyatt and Mike Ratledge (yes it apparently was an uncontested divorce), along with a bunch of other highly-skilled musicians . . . Ayers' debut is drenched in Psych tendencies, yet he doesn’t mind including the Pop or Pop/Rock motifs, which are all but trivial, but would probably not have pleased his ex-partners in crime.
