Label Conditions: Both fresh and clean with just a small few, very light and faint spindle marks.

Cat Number: SDL-R 11.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 150 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Rarity: Quite rare: one of the ‘semi-lost’ Deram prog albums that seldom shows up – especially in very fine condition.

Musicians: Steve Hillage - guitars, vocals; Nick Greenwood - bass, vocals; Eric Peachey - drums. Guest: Dave Stewart - organ, piano, skyceleste, marimbas.

Brief Info: Famed for its rarity and the inclusion of two prog stalwarts in Steve Hillage (ex-Gong) and the guest appearance of Dave Stewart (then of Egg). This is a high-demand Deram prog-gem with plenty of Hillage’s guitar and Stewart’s keyboards. Blending elements of Egg and sound of the future solo Hillage material, this is a great album that sold in minimal numbers and remains a very elusive set. This example includes a very fine cover and lacking the usual heavy wear seen on the few that do surface. The record looks hardly played and sounds superb for its entire duration. This is another from the collection of barely played records I acquired earlier this year.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High.

Cover Grade and Format: EX+ and this is no mean grading for this unforgiving cover. An unlaminated gatefold format that was printed and made in England by Robert Stace. The inside has references to the long defunct 8-Track Cartridges.

Cover Front: The freshest, least-worn example I have yet seen, the only minor blemishing is a few light creases near the bottom right. They barely even show unless viewed under angled light. The surface remains very clean indeed and devoid of the almost mandatory rubbing, scuffs or fading. Given all the facts, this front is truly exceptional.

Cover Back: Similar in most respects to the front and few will ever avoid ringwear. Here just a faint arc near top and bottom, this being over-emphasised by my camera flash. The odd minor mark under light but when did you last see this fragile cover looking much better?

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both faces are in superb condition with no set-off and barely any traces of rubbing. Very clean and fresh, this has the lyrics printed here.

Top Edges: Very light rub traces only.

Bottom Edges: Same again, just a little more towards the right corners.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear and no feathering, the odd minor burr trace when viewed end-on and guaranteed untrimmed. Record can enter on either of these open edges, neither were sealed even from new.

Spine and Text: A very nice spine and lacking the wear seen on these types. This is very solid and thick with minimal compression. A miinor surface graze near the top corner area but little else to fault with all text is present and unworn which on this cover is a noteworthy bonus.

Corners: All are neat and quite sharp and any wear or creasing is light and minimal.

Cover Summary: A rare Deram cover and in a highly desirable and tidy condition – I have seen a few of these before but not often and all apart from one have been in very worn conditions and left well alone. Given the intolerant nature of this dark unprotected sleeve, this is a fine example and most collectors will enjoy it.

The Inner: The lined Decca inner is excellent as least. It has aged little and is still lined with a very neat window and all edges unsplit. A little creasing and minor glue darkening. This is the original also with the correct 4-72 year code.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX++ to Mint(-) with just a small faint surface mark on side one that has NO sound whatsoever. A superb visual copy that is very clean with very fine shine, intense black and heavily pressed. A copy very lightly played on quality equipment with attractive playing surfaces. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This scarce Deram gem plays even above its high visual grading with little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. As per usual, a classy, quality Decca-Deram pressing with no surface sound or pops and clicks. Tracking is effortless with no problems at all. Few copies will match or outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Very little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful prog record – this simply gets better the more it’s heard. It will delight fans of Caravan, Egg and those type of ‘Canterbury’ bands of this period. This record will prove very difficult to find better and can be highly recommended. This example for cover, record and sound will blow most others away.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
