Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a couple or three very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. This elusive Fontana one-off appears hardly played.

Brief Info: Arguably a forgotten, even ‘lost’ one-off classic by the young Kiki Dee, it was her debut album, it proved a one-off on Fontana, she was then signed to Tamla Motown (briefly) becoming the first UK woman to record on that label, I am offering that as well from the same collection. A 1968 gem and a one-off for Fontana. Born Pauline Matthews, she started her singing career as a session musician, she became friends with Dusty Springfield for whom she sang backing vocals. Listening to this album Kiki Dee’s voice has a certain similarity and style to Dusty. She sings her trademark blue-eyed soul and northern soul songs to a superbly high standard. Alas she had to wait around five years to really become a household name when signing to Elton John’s Rocket Records, her first two albums largely went unnoticed. This a lovely copy appearing hardly played with an equally impressive cover with gorgeous artwork of the young singer. Any fan of the late, great Dusty Springfield are almost certain to treasure this vintage gem. This is the first copy of this album I have had to date.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with front laminate. This covers all the folds and ends on the back on three external flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England, uncredited, the back blurb is by Simon Dee (no relation), includes the original polylined white inner sleeve, this date-coded 018 (January 1968).

Lamination & Front: What a beautiful looking front with very shiny laminate that has minimal hint of dulling, a trace around the thick record rim area, this gently seen under angled light. This has avoided lifting and hardly any creasing, any traces fine and faint. This a front cover to hold and admire, not one seen at all often, and rarely in this superb condition, it has hardly aged at all.

Cover Back: Fontana covers in this format are known not to age well, this back has little to fault. Any discolouration to the white card is minimal, traces near the left opening edge, but barely any real wear at all. All three flipbacks are solid with crisp ends with minimal hint of discolouration. A back to more than complement the lovely front.

Top Edge: Totally unworn, the laminate unchipped and smooth. A gentle hint of bowing which is difficult to avoid totally on vintage laminated covers that have not lifted.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp, any thickening very light, hardly any really even as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: An almost perfect spine and this still very solid and mainly straight with any compression gentle, the ends are lightly nipped in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, also very centred on quite a narrow depth.

Corners: All the tips are almost as-made with hardly anything to fault, no bashes or dinks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this scarce cover. This will prove very difficult to find better. A really beautiful item that should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: or thereabouts, only marked down for natural discolouration of the white paper. Two immaculate undamaged window circles, the polylining slightly dulled only. Minimal creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Date-coded 018 (January 1968).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): and probably deserving the second (+). A superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light, wispy traces only. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant blue-eyed/Northern soul album plays up to and beyond it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. The odd gentle sporadic tick, but little else, few early copies will outperform this significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, like her second album I am also offering, it is actually quite difficult contemplate this record is actually this great age. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
