KIM FOWLEY – BUBBLE GUM / WILDFIRE (IMPERIAL 66349) (VG++)

From Los Angeles, CA, the never sleeping Kim Fowley was still cranking out his insanely crazy music in 1969.  He assembled an all-star cast of musicians for his Outrageous LP which was probably his most commercially successful release.  Both the songs on this 45 were from that LP.  Bubble Gum is an awesome late 60’s psych rocker with some amazing guitar from Mike Allsup.  And of course, the song is dominated by Fowley’s completely unorthodox vocals, which one has to believe varied tremendously from take to take!  The flip, Wildfire, is perhaps the very deepest dive that Fowley ever takes toward the border of insanity.  In this bizarre spoken word rant about his disdain and paranoia about fires being set in his neighborhood, he’s basically fully unhinged.   Having not listened to this track for at least 15 years, I noticed what sounded like a brief vocal glitch, but realized that this was perhaps one of the earliest attempts at vocal sampling technique ever attempted. His rant builds slowly and by the time this four-minute workout is complete, Fowley seems to have conquered “reality” and wants to go to sleep!  This side was arranged by Mars Bonfire and features some of his quirky improvised guitar leads. In essence, this tune pretty much exemplifies the quintessential Fowley and was appropriately the title of a later period compilation of his Imperial Records recordings.  This 45 had some mis-pressings that had the Wildfire label, but featured the song Animal Man instead.  This copy is NOT one of those mis-pressings and is in great condition, graded VG++ with a few minor audible pops on both sides. Check out the scans and audio samples.

Hi folks, this is Velvetfogg, founder of the U-SPACES music collective which ran from 1997 to 2020 on Yahoogroups and has now switched over to Facebook.  The primary focus of U-SPACES was to provide a network of Psych & Garage music aficionados to build and share compilations of non comped songs. Over the past 40 years I have amassed a large 45 & LP collection which I am now choosing to put up for auction to help fund my kid’s college educations.  Generally speaking, I am only putting things up for auction that are either in excellent condition or extremely rare.

My preference is to run these auctions on EBAY because of familiarity with the process, but there is the potential that I will switch or use other platforms in parallel in the future.  Check out my collection on DISCOGS under VELVETFOGG. I have only listed 45’s on that site that I plan to auction in 2021/22 and the list will grow substantially on a weekly basis as I continue to go through my collection. I hope to list 10 records per week for EBAY auctions on Sundays.
