MEGARARE and Hard-To-Find original Atlantic Records very first STEREO press released in Chile in 1976 by Atlantic Records, made and distributed by Asociación Fonográfica Nacional “ASFONA” M.R. (ASFONA Records), catalog number SD 8266, with hand etched matrix numbers SD-8266-A EB-CD in Side 1 and SD-8266-B EB-CD in Side 2, with traditional red/black Atlantic labels of the period. It’s interesting to notice that in both sides of the deadwax it’s written the day of pressing, “18-8-76” (August 18th of 1976) in Side 1 and “19-8-76” (August 19th of 1976) in Side 2. Yes, Sirs, ANOTHER FIND from Chile!!!

“IN THE WAKE OF POSEIDON” was originally released in 1970 by Island Records in UK and Atlantic Records in USA, but we had to wait until 1976 to see this great prog rock album in Chile and like most of the releases of that time, we got an UNIQUE COVER. In this case it’s a single non-gatefold and non-laminated flipback cover made of 2 pieces of very thin cardboard, with front cover pasted on the flaps of back cover. Front cover keeps strictly the same original artwork of UK release with the ASFONA Records logo at top right corner. Back cover also keeps the original artwork but it’s blue tinted with the album title written in English only, the tracklist written in English, translated to Spanish, with full credits for songwriters, and full credits written in English only, with Atlantic Records logo near to the mouth edge, with Atlantic Records catalog number below and “SERIE ESPECIAL DE LUJO” (Serie Deluxe Special) belowr too and  “EL DISCO ES CULTURA” (Record is culture) logo at the bottom left corner. In labels the album title and tracklist are written in English, translated to Spanish, with credits for songwriters. Yes Sirs… here it’s a REAL FIND, another rarity from Chile!!!

This is the very first press of “IN THE WAKE OF POSEIDON” released in Chile in 1976 as part of the "SERIE ESPECIAL DE LUJO" of ASFONA Records. It’s interesting to notice some errors, in back cover it says “Lado Uno” (Side 1) and “Lado Dos” (Side 2) but in labels the sides are identified as “A” and “B”. In back cover it’s informed the Copyright year of the album “1976 Atlantic Recording Corporation” but the correct year is 1970!!! The song “Picture Of A City”, correctly written in label “including 42nd At Treadmill”, is misspelled “including 42 nd At…”. But the most interesting fact about this record is that in Chile ASFONA Records kept the original Atlantic Records catalog number of US release, SD 8266, as you can see in labels, but in back cover they did an incredible error misspelling rhe code number “SD 8276”, because “SD 8276” is the original US Atlantic Records catalog number for the album “Search And Nearness” by The Rascals!!! WOW!!! UNIQUE ERROR WORLDWIDE!!!

The cover was already described and it’s in VG- or VG condition, no missing parts, no rips, no writings, but evident moderate wear, heavier in the mouth edge and corners, and full seam split at top edge and partial seam splits at spine and bottom edges, with tape at top edge, but still solid and complete with a respectable look as you can see in the pictures. The record is in VG+ or EX- condition both sides, glossy and clean, with loads of scuffs and light hairlines and very light scratches, which don’t affect play at all. Labels are in NM- or NM condition both sides, clean and clear, with only minimal spindle hole wear. The sound is the best part, it’s in strong EX+ or NM- condition the Side 1, loud, clear and clean, no background noise (surface noise is normal in records from Chile), only some minimal occasional crackles here and there, more evident at the beginning of the first song, and in EX- or EX condition the Side B, loud, clear and clear, with only minimal occasional crackles in the silent parts and in the song “The Devil’s Triangle”, which of course don’t distract at all from the great sound quality this record keeps from the beginning to the end. Overall, a great record, sure not for Minty minds if you consider the cover, but it still has a nice look and amazing sound quality after about 46 years, which shouldn’t disappoint anyone who knows the real level of rarity of this Chilean issue. A MUST TO HAVE for all King Crimson collectors and now you have the chance to get one of the rarest pressings worldwide, with UNIQUE COVER, UNIQUE BLUE TINTED BACK COVER and UNIQUE CATALOG NUMBER ERROR “SD 8276”!!! We don’t use the generic “VG” most of South American sellers use to hide poor quality conditions or “NM” or “Mint” for records which aren’t even clean and sound less than a normal “VG” in professional standards. We use the Record Collector’s Grading System with a little modification: we don’t use MINT grade but for Sealed records and we can use a + or – to show a most professional accurate description.

MINT (M): I only use this grade for Sealed records.

NEAR MINT (NM): The record itself is in like new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality (only some very very very light hairlines caused for the record rubbing the sleeve). The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in like perfect condition.

EXCELLENT (EX): The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality, maybe some surface marks which doesn’t affect play. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VERY GOOD (VG): The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD (G): The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.

FAIR (F): The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump.
The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.

POOR (P): The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

BAD (B): The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.
