King Crimson : In The Wake Of Poseidon

(Stereo - Pink 'I' Label A1/B1)

This highly collectable first pressing plays with very impressive audio with only a little obvious interference on S1.  The vinyl is incredibly clean and the pink 'I' labels are in superb condition.

The fully textured cover is one of the cleanest I have ever seen with none of the usual edge wear.  It comes complete with the original inner which has no splits.

Visual grading

The vinyl retains a lovely glossy sheen and there are no scratches or marks at all.  S1 does have one obvious hairline but it has no bearing on the quality of the audio.  S2 has a small band of very faint hairlines but you won't find many cleaner first pressings than this.  The run out grooves are super clean and there is very little spindle wear.  This is a vinyl that has definitely not been played too much.

Play grading  

'Peace - A Beginning' begins superbly with none of the associated crackle that you so often find.  There are a handful of clicks towards the end of this super quiet opening track which is a shame as the remainder as plays so well.

The super quiet intro on 'Pictures Of A City' has no 'background' the clarity is so impressive and it continues in the same precise manner.  For a vinyl that is fast approaching 50 years old the audio is incredibly good and even the long quiet section plays to near perfection with only a couple of light clicks.  Aside from that there is no intrusion on the audio whatsoever.  Stunning!

'Cadence & Cascade' has some light clicks on the quiet intro but there is no other 'background' i.e. no static or crackle.  From then on it plays extremely well with only a handful of mega light 'ticks'.  For such a quiet track the playback could hardly be any better apart from the intro that is.

'In The Wake Of Poseidon' again impresses with no obvious interference.  There are no clicks and the depth and clarity of audio is so strong.  The quieter sections play so clearly and whilst there is a little inner groove distortion on the end section it is minimal and is not intrusive in any way.  This is a 'high end' version of this classic without doubt.

The acoustic intro on S2 plays with excellent clarity for the majority.  There are four light 'ticks' in the middle section and one click and a pop literally at the end.

'Cat Food' then plays very clearly and with barely any intrusion, just a couple of clicks that are largely 'buried' in the music.  Again there is no static or crackle and the quiet end section plays impeccably well.

The slow build up on 'The Devil's Triangle' is superb!  With only a couple of light clicks this is one of the 'cleanest' versions of this track I have heard in a long time.  This entire instrumental piece plays with great precision and depth and barely any inner groove distortion.  The vast majority plays with Near Mint quality without doubt.

'Peace - An End' plays with fantastic clarity from start to finish.  For a final track to play so clearly is a rarity and especially one as quiet as this.  A stunning Near Mint version in my opinion.  There are no clicks or pops and no intrusive static, what a superb version!

In summary this collectable first pressing plays with great clarity and depth for the vast majority.  Yes there is a little interference, mainly on S1, but it's relatively rare to find a genuine first press playing as well as this.  The textured cover is also one of the most impressive I have ever seen as is the original inner.

The Cover

The textured E.J. Day gatefold is in superb condition with barely any shelf wear!  The edges have only a handful of tiny rubs and the spine has only two small rubs and remains fully legible.  The corners are also very clean and the opening edges have only a small amount of handling wear.  Both the front and back cover are in fantastic condition with no marking and I have never seen cleaner.  The inside of the gatefold is also 'as new' and overall this is a wonderful example of this iconic cover.

Inner Sleeve

The original 'Plastic Bags' polylined inner (dated 0470) is in excellent order with no splits or tears and only a little creasing and age related fading near the top edge.

The Labels

The famous pink Island labels have no marking or writing and retain their strong colour perfectly.  As stated there is not a great deal of spindle wear.

Play tested on my Pro-Ject Essential III Turntable / B&W 684 Speakers
