Label Conditions: Beautiful examples, both very clean, fresh and attractive with just a couple of mild spindle marks on side two seen under light. This record appears hardly played and the sound is stunning. I would as far as to say, it is one of the very best and cleanest pressed copies I have ever had or heard. This on a typically very challenging prog-rock album.

Rarity: Moderately scarce, in fact I see far more pink label copies than pink rims. What I consider to be rare is the superb clean sound this record offers. It was a genuine delight to play-grade with barely anything unwanted heard at all. That is very unusual indeed on a record with massive volume and very quiet passages in equal amounts.

Brief Artist & Album Info: After the astonishing groundbreaking magnificence of their debut album, how could this ever be followed up? – well the answer was to issue another similar album. It peaked at No 4 in the UK album charts and still remains as the band’s most successful in that respect. This one was not given the same adulation as the first by some critics of the day, that labelled it as another ‘In the Court of’. Sure, the formula has similarities, especially on side one – a loud first track, a quieter second, and an epic third, but all the songs are treasures in their own right. Side two does vary more: after the somewhat bizarre jazzy single ‘Cat Food’, that features brilliant piano work by Keith Tippet, it becomes immensely powerful and compelling, as ‘The Devil’s Triangle’ instrumental builds with ferocious intensity with heavy use of the magnificent Mellotron. This legendary keyboard instrument is blasted to it’s limits by Fripp with an intensity that was probably never matched. Unfairly underrated in my opinion, ‘Poseidon’ is simply another Crimson classic – it mixes calm relaxed songs with full-on chaos making it a hugely challenging set. Beautifully packaged also (apart from maybe the use of silver ink inside that is always hard to read). Cover surfaces vary – the very first issues were very deeply textured, the surface looking like a real oil painting. Subsequent versions were less deeply textured and had varying patterns. Pressing quality was also variable, this one superbly made by EMI and offering immense detail and power, without inherent pressing issues or noises. Cleanly pressed on high quality vinyl, this was a delight and pleasure to experience – trying finding a copy of their third album ‘Lizard’ pressed to this standard. To date, this is one of the very best pressed and cleanest sounding copies I have ever heard and it was a genuine delight to play – and at volume.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt textured surfaces. The pattern on this one are tiny dots, one of the more unusual variant textured patterns used on this famous prog cover. The inside is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group, London and Bedrord. Includes the Blue Island Basing Street Inner sleeve.

Cover Front & Back: A genuine work-of-art that looks impressive. Incredibly prone to wear as to be expected with complex texturing of the outer surfaces. There is a little light, very patchy, rubbing mainly near the spine edge on the front, but barely anything on the back which has hardly anything to fault. The colour is very deep and vivid, again this varies considerably every time this cover was reprinted. I have not seen many with this ‘dot’ texturing which gives this version an almost unique appearance. The lack of ring wear and light fading are major pluses, as is the lack of sticker issues. So a little mild rubbing which is almost the least to expect on this unforgiving cover which still looks attractive as-seen.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to really fault, both surfaces are clean and attractive.

Top Edges: Both flat and straight with hardly any wear.

Bottom Edges: Very similar with just a little very patchy rubbing on the front.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both neat and still mostly sharp with any thickening little and light. The record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: A fantastic spine that is virtually as-issued. Solid, straight with no compression, also folded very close to square, so the edges meet up very closely. The surface and its text unworn or faded, this area seldom looking this nice.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light, little at all actually, and with no knocks.

Cover Summary: I cannot emphasise enough how intolerant this cover is to poor or inadequate storage, lack of protection or heavy-handling. Many are found in a very poor or shabby states putting a fine early example like this into real perspective. With only light very patchy small rubs, this will prove difficult to find substantially better and should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): The blue Island inner retains its polylining and has aged little. Hardly creased with all edges naturally intact with mininal fading of the colour. This has the ‘basing street london’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+) / (++): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with lovely shine and very solidly pressed. A copy appearing hardly played with hardly any surface marks bar a small superficial non-sounding scuff on side one. Also there is no mottling or inpurity in the vinyl which is superbly pressed with sound to match. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This progressive rock classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault – and that is something I have rarely heard on this incredibly complex recording. This offers very powerful, strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A typical prog and King Crimson album with some very quiet, gentle passages – some almost silent – then quickly changing to ferocious chaos and volume. Massively challenging for vinyl and vintage equipment at the time of issue – so many trashed and written-off by heavy tracking, often still mono record players. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed – barely anything at all noted – and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies – no matter which pressing it is – will outperform this very early pink rim pressing significantly I feel sure. Few can hope to play ‘silent’ these days (or even from new being honest), but this super-impressive EMI pressed copy was a genuine joy. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find better and merits my highest recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
