THE NEW SCENE -

This could well be my favorite jazz recording of all time. It's not innovative in any way, but the band's chemistry is really something - with Curtis on the tenor sax, Nat Adderley on the trumpet, Wynton Kelly on the keys, Paul Chambers on the base, and Ollie Jackson on the drums. Curtis really anchors this album, playing bluesy, R&B riffs over a hard-bop setting. Highly recommended

INSTANT GROOVE -  King Curtis was an R&B saxophonist who had numerous charting albums in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was tragically stabbed to death in 1971 at the early age of 37. One of his albums featured another great musician who died young, Duane Allman. That album is Instant Groove, which reached # 160 on the Billboard album charts in 1969

SOUL TWIST. When this came out, every rythm section tried copping these riffs, and they're -still- trying. This opening track is quite likely the ONE greatest instrumental recording ever.
