King Oliver was a pivotal figure in the development of the new jazz sound, and became 'king' of New Orleans with this snappy cornet in the time just after the first world war. He moved north to Chicago and also invited a kid named Louis Armstrong to join - it was one of those watershed moments in music.
He only had a few hits but his influence went far and wide in the 1920's and '30s. He was only with Victor for two years (having left Brunswick) and this pair of songs for is from a session on September 12, 1930. The songs are "You Were Only Passing Time With Me" and "What's The Use Of Living Without Love." That's George Bias on vocals.
