about HOTTER THAN HELL USA:

contrary to common knowledge, Hotter Than Hell is the worst selling KISS album until 1993, at least on its own. its peak position was #100 on the charts and its only single "Let me go rock and roll" (a very poor choice) literally received NO airplay. the album sounded so bad that a second single was out of the question and Casablanca was in the midst of struggling to even remain a label as their distribution was in serious disarray. IF a retail bogart label of Let me go rock and roll b/w Hotter than hell does exist, it should be considered the rarest American KISS vinyl of all time. it was later issued on filmworks label in 1977 and is also extremely rare. promo copies of this 45 are very rare as well and feature the song on both sides (stereo and mono). the only reason Hotter Than Hell achieved gold status in 1977, was because it was re-released on "The Originals" a repressing of the first 3 albums. the 2nd press of the originals finally certified HTH gold.
there were 6 pressings of Hotter Than Hell.
1. the first and second pressings were very close together and pretty much identical. the ONLY difference, is the 1st lacks the Casablanca address and is the rarest. the 2nd was issued in 1976 with the address at the bottom. the 3rd pressing came in late 1976 with the tan "Casbah" label and included a printed Casablanca records innersleeve. the first 3 pressings used a very nice shiny silver ink on the jacket. it is very hard to tell a 2nd press from a 3rd, but the 1st was made of slightly thicker cardboard.
3. the 4th pressing omitted the nice silver ink and replaced it with a flat gray printed on a white cardboard jacket. the LP Casbah label was changed to a "Filmworks" label and the innersleeve was either a white and brown printed Casablanca Record and Filmworks sleeve, or the same except advertising the film and soundtrack for the movie "The Deep".
4. the 5th pressing was very short lived, as HTH was never a good seller. it is pretty rare. it has the number 501 on the top right or has the number 501 with a barcode sticker. innersleeve was filmworks on brown and white paper. silver was still flat gray. it is rarer than the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th pressings!
5. the 6th and final vinyl pressing of HTH is perhaps the most interesting. ALL copies were pressed on brown cardboard with a printed barcode in the top middle right corner. for some reason, the red on the bottom of Gene's tongue on the back cover was changed to gray. a few error copies exist, that completely omit the KISS logo (or any mention of KISS) on the LP's Filmworks labels! it was corrected quickly with a "Lick It Up" style KISS logo soon after, underneath the album title. innersleeves were either plain plastic, or filmworks brown and white paper. ALL 6th pressings are very, VERY RARE.
