KITTY WELLS THE GOLDEN YEARS 5 LP BEAR FAMILY BOX SET
From 1987 comes this original 5 LP pressing of Bear Family's Kitty Wells box set The Golden Years (1949-1957) (Bear Family BFX 15239), presenting the beloved gingham-clad country songstress' early years in their entirety - from her first eight songs waxed for RCA Victor to her instant world-changing success at Decca with her proto-feminist answer song to Hank Thompson's "The Wild Side Of Life," "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky-Tonk Angels." Also included with the 95 tracks here are the likes of "Paying For That Back Street Affair" (another answer song - this time to Webb Pierce's "Back Street Affair"), "Icicles Hanging From Your Heart," "My Cold Cold Heart Is Melting Now" (don't have to tell you what that's an answer song to!), "Release Me," "Makin' Believe," "Searching," "Dust On The Bible," "Lonely Street," and a number of duets with Webb Pierce, Red Foley, and Roy Acuff. Also included in this package is a bonus 12" EP consisting of four previously-unreleased 1960-61 duets with Roy Drusky.
The outer box is in excellent condition with some minor shelf wear, scratching, and a few spots of discoloration (including one on the right flap which, of course, won't show once filed away spine out). The six individual sleeves for the records are all in mint condition. The records inside are excellent to near mint, with faint traces of mild warping detectable in the first three discs - none of which is pronounced enough to affect play. Additionally, there is a 32-page booklet telling the story of these most formative years in Kitty's life and career along with a well-detailed discography/sessionography - both written by the late country music historians Bob Pinson and Charles Wolfe with assistance from Bear Family owner Richard Weize. It is in very fine condition with just a few small spots of discoloration on its front and back covers.
