K.S. SORABJI – MI CONTRA FA 1947 1st DJ – SIGNED RARE!

British Composer Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji was quite an obscure character, he banned public performances of all his works for several decades and Sorabji wrote piano pieces that were hours and hours long and virtually impossible to play. He was a writer of powerful musical criticism.

This book MI CONTRA FA (The Immortalisings of a Machiavellian Musician) by K.S. Sorabji was published by the Porcupine Press, London, 1947, this being a 1st edition, complete with dust jacket and signed on inside front cover by Sorabji, with the inscription ‘To the Robin Hood’s Bay Reading Room – Souvenir of 46 years ago’, signed in full with roman numerals on various dates!!

Although he lived and worked in England most of his life, Sorabji followed no school or contemporary fashion…..his music may be said to exhibit an essentially Oriental mind…..In putting forth this point of view,….few minds in either East or West were prepared for such a systhesis. As a writer of acute musical appreciation and criticism, Sorabji has long held a unique position. His first book “Around Music” appeared 14 years previously and Of himself, Sorabji says that he com bines in his person by an ingenious device all the qualities perfectly calculated to make him persona ingratissima in all the ‘correct’ musical circles. Believing these statements have some justific ation, the publishers present this new book of essays on a wide diversity of topics linking music and society, to interest and perhaps provoke all those who compose, perform or listen to music.

Measuring 145 x 220mm it contains 247 pages. Hardback cover in reasonable condition with discolouration to edges and a little wear. Dust jacket discoloured with some tearing to extremities and top and bottom spine with bottom of spine missing to about half an inch, small tape repair. Back also shows tears in places top and bottom. Little discoloured inside, mainly age toning, but text pages generally are sound and good for age.
