ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This very rare LP – a beautiful collector’s copy - from Deutsche Grammophon (423 610-1, German pressing, white circle label, DDD stereo) features Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra's vibrant, romantic and eminently stylish accounts of Mozart's Serenade No. 13 in G Major K. 525 "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" and Divertimento No. 15 in B-flat Major K. 287, both taped in the Philharmonie, Berlin, the former in February 1981 and the latter in September 1987, making it among the last recordings to enter Herbert von Karajan's vast discography.
Wrote the esteemed critic Ivan March in his December 1988 review for The Gramophone: "Karajan's love of Mozart is apparent in all his recordings, and especially those of the divertimentos and serenades. His approach, using a full body of strings and unashamedly rich textures, is very unfashionable these days, even for those who resist the acerbities of 'authentic' violin timbre. Yet there is so much to beguile the ear in the playing of the Berlin Philharmonic strings, that it is easy to be won over. The airy grace of the finale of the B flat Divertimento is sheer delight, and if the Adagio is indulgently sumptuous, the phrasing is the soul of elegance, while one cannot help but respond to the lightness of string articulation in the Trio of the Minuet. The detail of the second movement Andante grazioso con variazioni is full of imaginative touches, while in the opening movement the unabashed virtuosity of the violins, wonderfully clean in ensemble, cannot help but bring a smile to the music-making.
"The opening movement of the Nachtmusik is taken fairly fast and one ideally would have liked a more relaxed feeling here, yet the central movements are ideally paced and have many individual touches of light and shade. The finale has energy but is never overdriven and again the rhythmic pointing is elegant and graceful. The recording, made in the Philharmonie, is very real and vivid, the strings a shade fuller and richer in K287 (recorded in 1987) than in Einekleine Nachirnusik, which has appeared before and dates from 1981."
Incidentally, the striking cover art was created by Holger Matthies, Hamburg. Superb liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket are provided in English, French, and German (by Michael Stegemann), as well as in Italian (by Carlo Vitali).
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of and the album appears as new – an outstanding collector’s copy.
The condition of the LP is near-MINT and the playback is superb – overall, a truly fine collector's copy.
