This beautiful LP – a still-sealed copy – from Angel Records (35891, US pressing*, label iteration unknown – presumably red/silver Angel label, mono) features Herbert von Karajan and the Philharmonia Orchestra’s resplendent account of Sibelius' Symphonies No. 2 in D Major Op. 43, recorded in the fabled acoustics of London’s Kingsway Hall on 28 March 1960.
Of EMI’s CD re-issue of this performance, coupled with the Karajan/Philharmonia Sibelius Fifth, the eminent critic Misha Donat wrote for BBC Music Magazine:
“These recordings were among Karajan’s last sessions with the Philharmonia. (His later Sibelius – both for EMI and DG – was made with the Berlin Philharmonic.) The performances are gripping from start to finish, with Karajan firmly in control of the music’s sweep and grandeur, and an atmosphere of intensity that seldom flags. After nearly 40 years, the Kingsway Hall sound stands up remarkably well, if its somewhat gritty quality tends to exaggerate the nasal quality of the Philharmonia’s oboes.”
There are excellent liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Robert Layton, printed in English only. The striking cover photo of Karajan is uncredited.
*Please note: The reverse side of the jacket suggests this is a US pressing, but typically during this period the jackets were printed in the USA, but the LPs themselves were pressed by EMI in England. Given the weight and inflexibility of the whole, this is most certainly the red/silver Angel label – ED1, and not the later (and lighter in weight) blue label, though I cannot absolutely guarantee that. I will not accept a return because the pressing turns out to be from the USA versus the UK. There was / is absolutely no difference in quality between USA and UK Angel Records pressings from this era.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. Aside from minor bumping at corners, there are no flaws to speak of and the album appears almost as new. There are no seamsplits, owners' markings, bends, or other defects, and whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, an outstanding collector's copy.
The condition of the LP is MINT. This is a still-sealed, unplayed copy – the ideal collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
