This beautiful LP from Deutsche Grammophon (415 509-1, German pressing, white circle label, DDD stereo) features Herbert von Karajan and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra's resplendent accounts of Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 in E minor Op. 95 'From the New World' and Smetana's Vlata (Die Moldau), both recorded in the warm and spacious acoustics of the Grosser Saal of the Musikverein, Vienna in February and May 1985, respectively.

Both works were staples of Karajan's repertoire throughout his long career and he brings a lifetime's wisdom and experience to what would prove to be his final versions of these works. The VPO, the woodwinds in particular, play beautifully, with warmth and passion.

The director of production was Günther Breest, the recording supervisor Michel Glotz, and the balance engineer Günter Hermanns. Incidentally, the memorable cover photo was taken by Gabriela Brandenstein, Vienna.. There are superlative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket in German and Italian (by Karl Schumann), in English (by Michael Kennedy), and in French (by Pierre Vidal).

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD+. There is some edgewear, more so at corners, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, owners' markings, bends, or other defects and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
