ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This fine LP from Telefunken (SLT 43015, German pressing, black/silver label, stereo, original inner sleeve included) features Joseph Keilberth and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra's vital and ebullient accounts of Haydn's Symphonies No. 85 in B-flat Major "La Reine" and No. 101 in D Major "Clock", both works recorded in the warm acoustics of the Kulturraum, Bamberg on 11 and 7 July 1957, respectively.
The underrated Keilberth was a remarkable musician, one now enjoying critical reassesment following Testament's issue of his transcendent 1955 Bayreuth Wagner 'Ring Cycle'. Hopefully, this will lead to further re-issues from Keilberth's large and highly distinguished discography. His Haydn is revelatory, and comparisons with Karajan, Jochum, Bohm, Walter, Klemperer, et al. are not to Keilberth's disadvantage. The sound is superb.
Incidentally, the cover photo of Keilberth was taken by G. Wolfson. There are excellent liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in German and English.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is GOOD. There is a fair amount of edgewear, particularly at corners (the lower-right corner has a 1" split to it as well). There is also minor ringswear and light scuffing. However, there are no other seamsplits, nor are there any owners' markings, or other defect, and the album remains solid and presentation worthy – still a decent copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, and there are 2 ticky/noisy passages in No. 101, really this is a fine copy and the playback is quite fine. However, if you must have flawless or NM surfaces, then please do not buy this LP – overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
