ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This hansome LP set (box with jacket) from Telefunken (LGX 66003, English pressing, black/gold label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features conductor Joseph Keilberth's resplendent account of Brahms's Symphony No. 1 in C minor Op. 68, recorded with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra at Festsäle, Lichterfelder, Berlin on 9 March 1951.
The underrated Keilberth was a wonderful musician, one now enjoying critical reassesment following Testament's issue of his transcendent 1955 Bayreuth Wagner 'Ring Cycle'. Hopefully, this will lead to further re-issues from Keilberth's large and highly distinguished discography. His Brahms is revelatory, and comparisons with Karajan, Jochum, Furtwangler, et al. are not to Keilberth's disadvantage. The sound is superb, rich and full-bodied.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the box is VERY GOOD. The only flaw is that the upper-right and lower-right corners of the box top are broken, though rarther discreetly so. There is also a slight bit of edgewear. Otherwise, this is really quite fine – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of and the jacket appears virtually as new. There are no seamsplits, owners' markings, or bends, and the jacket remains extremely solid, bright, glossy, and attractive – overall, a truly lovely collector's copy, still inside the hard laminated sleeve Telefunken then provided.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not CD silent, in general the playback is superb. If you need a flawless or near-MINT copy, then you are advised to look elsewhere – overall, this is an excellent collector's copy.
