Keith Kelly became a professional musician after his National Service. For a couple of years, until 1959, he was rhythm guitarist and vocalist with the John Barry Seven. He then left the Barry band to try his luck as a solo performer. He appeared regularly at the 2 i’s Coffee Bar in London and it was there that his potential was spotted by none other than the later-to-be Beatles record producer, George Martin. Martin signed Kelly to Parlophone records and – presumably – produced the recordings that Kelly made for the label.

Keith Kelly’s first single, (Must You Always) Tease Me, was reasonably successful, reaching number 27 in the UK charts. Unfortunately for him however, he had a car accident shortly afterwards and the release of his follow-up single, Listen Little Girl, had to be delayed. The impetus that he might have had with the record-buying public was lost and Listen Little Girl only managed to creep briefly into the bottom of the Top Fifty.

So that was pretty much it for Keith Kelly’s recording career. Another single, With You, seems to have followed but it sank without trace. It’s seems a shame. The two records here are both the kind of cheerful pop / beat songs you would expect from a British post rock’n’roll solo performer at this time - but Keith Kelly had a decent voice and, unusually for the period, he wrote both sides of his debut single himself. If you find a picture of him, you will see that he also had something of the look of Buddy Holly, which might have helped move his career along.

Both these singles are fairly hard to find now, particularly Listen Little Girl – there’s only one copy listed for sale on Discogs at the moment for example, and that one has an asking price of £35.00.

Neither of these examples is of the very finest condition. Both have a fair sprinkling of light surface marks although neither has any marks bad enough to cause audible clicks or pops. Tease Me is the better of the two in terms of condition – but both records actually play very cleanly and have a nice, bright sound. Tease Me has the original owner’s initials on the label in ink to the A-side and also has a small mark from a sticky label. The labels to Listen Little Girl are nice and clean. Both singles have period Parlophone sleeves.
