This handsome and outstanding LP from La Voz de su Amo (ASDL 782, Spanish pressing, cream/silver label – ED1, stereo) features Rudolf Kempe and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra's famous "Nights in Vienna" album, a collection of orchestral bon bons that gives Sir Thomas Beecham a run for his money. Taped in the fabled acoustics of Vienna's Musikvereinssaal on 19/20 January 1958, these magical performances are imbued with an old world Viennese charm, as well as a brilliant orchestral panache that is quite simply breathtaking. If the Berliners seem to keep Kempe at arm's length, the VPO struck a warm rapport with their charismatic guest conductor. This is one of the great LPs of its kind.

There are superb liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Ralph Harvey, printed in Spanish only. The striking cover photo is uncredited.

These fine Spanish HMV pressings are quite rare, particularly as Spain's record industry was very much limited by the exigencies of life under the Franco dictatorship and most titles were pressed in smaller numbers than they were in the UK, France, or Germany. Moreover, these LPs (made in Barcelona) are every bit as fine as their Continental or American counterparts – an interesting acquisition for the intrepid collector, a remarkable disc in every way.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is edgewear, more so at corners, as well as faint ringwear, shelfwear, and discoloration to the rear panel. However, there are no bends, seamsplits, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
