This handsome LP from Philips (A 00141 L, Dutch pressing, plum/gold label, flat pancake vinyl, mono) features conductor Paul van Kempen and the Concertgebouw Orchestra’s resplendent account of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 in E minor Op. 64, sumptuously recorded in the Grote Zaal of the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, in December 1951.
Kempen’s reading is imbued throughout with tremendous ardor and unfailing power. The Concertgebouw players respond with playing of breathtaking power and Philips has provided their finest analog sound – this is exalted conducting, and orchestral playing – by any measure and a testament to van Kempen’s considerable gifts.
Wrote the erudite critic Paul Shoemaker in his review for MusicWeb-International:
“Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony - actually his tenth - is the most difficult to conduct, or at least the most difficult of the last three Symphonies. The famous horn solo is obviously a reworked tenor or bass aria from opera sketches, and the seams show. The valse is ballet music. Taneyev was intense in his criticism of the work for this reason. Who knows how Tchaikovsky might have revised this work if he had lived beyond age 53? Van Kempen’s performance of the Fifth Symphony is a fine reading, in the top twenty, but these days you want one with modern sound. But we are all individuals, and my favourite performance of all time is Odd Grüner Hegge conducting the Oslo PO on an old RCA Victrola LP. There will be many people who like this Kempen performance over all others, but they may not know anyone else who does.”
There are extensive liner notes (uncredited), as well as some charming illustrations, on the reverse side of the jacket – all texts in English only. The striking cover design is uncredited.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. The spine has been carefully and profssionally repaired. There is edgewear, creasing, and aging, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector’s copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Visually it appears only as VG (spindle trails and light marks), but surpisingly it plays NM. And while surfaces are not pefectly silent, this is a fine copy and the playback is superb. However, if you must have a flawless or NM copy, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, rates as an excellent collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
