This handsome LP – in a sturdy cardboard “red stereo” export jacket – from Deutsche Grammophon (SLPM 138 707, German pressing, AH tulip label, stereo) features the great pianist Wilhelm Kempff in a sublime all-Mozart recital, warmly recorded at UFA Studios, Berlin, in January 1962.

The exact contents are as follows, all works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart:

Piano Sonata No. 8 in A minor K. 310

Piano Sonata No. 11 in A Major K. 331

Fantasia in D minor K. 397

Fantasia in C minor K. 475

This is exalted playing by any measure, Mozart that can be spoken of in the same breath as that by Edwin Fischer, Artur Schnabel, Walter Gieseking, Murray Perahia, Mitsuko Uchida, et al.

The reverse side of the jacket carries insightful liner notes (uncredited), provided in English only. The striking cover portrait of Kempff is similarly uncredited, alas.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is a small catalog number taped to the upper spine, as well as as small tears to the upper-right and -left corners and general shelfwear. However, there are no  seamsplits, bends, owners' markings or other defects and the whole remains bright, solid, and highly attractive – overall, still a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
