Ken Nordine: "Colors" (Philips PHM 200-224) This is a pristine stereo copy, with a mono jacket and label!
This is a unique LP in more ways than one. First, how many times have you heard a stereo LP that features a mono jacket, and mono label? I've been collecting LP's for almost 50 years and this is the 2nd time it's happened in my experience! (The other LP is by The Rolling Stones.) It makes me wonder, and you should be wondering as well, how many mono copies were sold that were actually stereo We should also be wondering just how many people who regularly sell collectible LP's ever bother to notice these things!
I think it's fair to assume that if you're bidding on this LP that you know a thing or 2 about the late Ken Nordine, the man who created Word Jazz. What those of you who do know Nordine should know, and with this LP I learned, is that he continued to "word jazz" records after his days at Dot. .
If you're a chaser of the super cool, like Miles, Sonny, and Coltrane, then you should also be chasing Ken Nordine. He's among the coolest dudes to ever cut LP's during the era of cool jazz. He created his own coolness with the help of jazz greats, like Paul Horn, Chico Hamilton, and Eric Dolphy. The musicians on this title are unidentified, but they are in that same class. 34 cuts! All of them describing different colors, in that very special Word Jazz way! Nobody could do it better than Ken Nordine.
A word on the sound. This LP has incredible STEREO sound! It's pressed on DEAD SILENT vinyl! How's that for an LP from the mid 60s?! By the way, for you audiophiles (who ought to be the ones looking at this), I was impressed just how much better the recent installation of a Dynavector 17D phono cartridge made this record sound. I'm not saying that other phono cartridges, even non moving coil cartridges, couldn't also reproduce this LP beautifully, but I was so impressed by the sound with the Dynavector that I wanted to share my audiophile experience. I normally don't sell LP's that sound this amazing. I love LP's that sound like this! The reason I'm selling this is because I need shelf space. I also need to do some work on my car.
This LP was play graded using an audiophile audio system, featuring a Dynavector 17D moving coil cartridge, and Luxman vacuum platter turntable, feeding an EAR tube preamp. It's hard to believe that some people would play-grade valuable LP's on a plastic USB turntable, and consider themselves worthy of selling to others. I've been collecting LP's for 47 years. I know a great LP when I see and hear it.
The jacket condition is a solid A-. I removed the wrinkled shrink wrap that was protecting the jacket. leaving colors that are vibrant and strong. Both upper corners have very small creases, and there is a small cut-out hole in the upper-right-hand corner. My guess is the cut-out LP's were sold in the early 70s, prior to Nordine's renewed fame, starting in the late 80s, thanks to the Grateful Dead.
