Khan Space Shanty LP PVC US 1978
Original US pressing on PVC 7902 of the 1972 UK Deram release. (Not in a gatefold sleeve). This was the first US release, in 1978, of the album; Hillage and Stewart’s names were printed over the original artwork as they were both well-known by that time.

Khan was the second brainchild of Steve Hillage. Previously in Uriel (or Arzachel, whichever your prefer), the guitarist went off to complete his studies at University where much of the album was written. In 1971, he formed Khan with Nick Greenwood on bass and Eric Peachy on drums with support from Caravan’s manager. Dave Stewart replaced original keyboardist Dick Henningham just prior to recording their first and only album. The title track reveals some heavy rock, but that gives way to some great soloing, one of the albums’ strengths. Building on the Arzachel/Egg formula, Space Shanty benefits immensely from Hillage’s guitar. On the Space Shanty record, it’s pre-Space Echo and never shy to bend a few notes and rock out. Stewart’s organ, of course, is the perfect compliment. Hillage’s first solo album, Fish Rising would be the logical successor; just listen to the closing of "Driving To Amsterdam". Hillage and Stewart carried on with a new rhythm section for a few short months, but respective offers from Kevin Ayers and Hatfield and the North eventually lured both away.
