This beautiful and rare LP – a still-sealed collector’s copy – from Melodiya (CM-03117/18, Soviet pressing, blue/silver label, stereo) features the great cellist Mikhail Khomitser in a remarkable mixed recital, warmly recorded in Moscow with the equally gifted pianist Naum Walter.

Khomitser (b. 1935) was a pupil of Sviatoslav Knushevitzky and his recordings, all touched by distinction and all worth seeking out, should be much better known.

Khomitser’s exact program is as follows:

Schubert: Sonata in A minor for Cello and Piano D. 821 "Arpeggione"

Tchaikovsky: Pezzo capriccioso for Cello and Piano in B minor Op. 62  

Schumann: Drei Phantasiestücke for Violin and Piano Op. 73

No. 1 Zart und mit Ausdruck  

No. 2 Lebhaft, leicht

No. 3 Rasch und mit Feuer  

Incidentally, on the reverse side of the jacket, there is an informative biographical sketch (uncredited) of Khomitser provided in Russian, French, and English. The memorable cover photo is similarly uncredited.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT.  There is minor bumping / creasing to the two lower corners, but that is all. There are no seam splits, owners' markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and attractive – overall, an excellent collector’s copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not absolutely silent, really this is a very fine copy and the playback is superb. Only those requiring completely silent surfaces need hesitate. Overall, this rates as a lovely collector's copy.
