King Crimson In The Court Of The Crimson King UK 1969 Pink 'i' label A2/B4 Press
'In the Court of the Crimson King' is the debut studio album by the British progressive rock band King Crimson. Released in 1969, this album is widely regarded as a seminal work in the progressive rock genre and one of the most influential and groundbreaking albums in the history of rock music. The album is known for its innovative and eclectic musical style, blending elements of rock, jazz, classical music, and even some avant-garde influences. It features complex song structures, virtuoso musicianship, and a wide range of sonic textures.
The album's iconic cover art, featuring a surreal and otherworldly depiction of a crimson king, was created by Barry Godber. It has become one of the most recognizable album covers in the history of rock music. This example is graded as EX+ despite some slight wear.
The gatefold cover was printed and manufactured by E. J. Day, London on card. The printed surface was unlaminated and, as such, more liable to damage from storage etc. This is an excellent example with minimal damage overall. There is evidence of storage and resultant rubbing on the corners but there is no obvious rubbing to the edges. Please see the pictures for details of the corner wear. The spine has a little wear although the title, band, label and catalogue number are clearly readable as can be seen in the pictures. There is some faint creasing at the top and bottom of the back of the gatefold but this is not overly significant or even noticeable except when the light is at a certain angle. There are also a small indentation on the front of the gatefold which can only be seen when the light is at a certain angle. Entry edge wear is minimal as can be seen in the photographs. The inside of the cover is clean and unmarked apart from where the damage to the corners is apparent (see pictures). The colours remain rich and vivid with no blemishes. Overall this is a great example of this album. It has no tears or splits and shows less than normal wear and tear for a 51 year old album. It is therefore graded conservatively as EX+.
The inner sleeve is undamaged apart from age related discolouration. No tears or splits. It cannot be assumed to be the original inner although it would certainly seem to be age appropriate. Graded EX.
The vinyl is graded as EX+. The smooth Pink 'I'' Island labels show very little in the way of spindle marks on both sides. Otherwise they are unmarked. There is very little static noise on the run in on both sides and nothing else which would cause an issue when listening to the album. There are a few low volume clicks or pops but this is not really an issue and, once again, does not detract from the excellent audio. There are a few hairlines on both sides but this is minimal. There are no scratches or other marks. The audio quality is superb - particularly during the quieter parts of the album. Please note that the difference in colour in the close-up photographs of the labels is a result of the photography. The labels are the same colour!

It should be noted that at the end of Track 2, Side 1, 'I Talk To The Wind', almost totally fades out before the opening of Track 3, 'Epitaph', rather than segueing into it. This would suggest that this copy was pressed by Polydor before Island moved to having their albums pressed by EMI in 1970 making this a rare copy.
In conclusion, although this is not a truly archive copy, it is a superb example. 'In the Court of the Crimson King' received widespread critical acclaim upon its release. Critics praised its musical innovation and the virtuosity of the band members. It's often cited as one of the pioneering works in the progressive rock genre. This is clearly apparent in this particular example.
