King Crimson evolved out of Giles, Giles and Fripp, which Fripp had formed with the Giles brothers in 1967. Frustrated by lack of success Peter Giles left the band and with the addition of Greg Lake and Ian McDonald, King Crimson was born early in 1969. They debuted at London's Speakeasy Club, made their recording debut with a session for John Peel's 'Top Gear' and enjoyed a 12 week residency at the Marquee, but their big break came when they supported The Rolling Stones at their free concert in Hyde Park and made a big impression on the vast crowd.
Their debut album is usually regarded as their prime achievement and its best known track, 21st Century Schizoid Man, had a futurist feel and impulsiveness that made the listener sit up and take note. Its inclusion on Island's budget compilation, Nice Enough To Eat, also helped bring it to a wider audience but strangely it was not released as a 45 at the time. The title track, a superb progressive number with harmonies and mellotron, was selected for 45 release but wasn't sufficiently commercial for the singles market. This debut album is recommended as one of the best by a UK progressive band.
