Description
For a sale is a U.S. Atlantic white label promo pressing of King Crimson's second album, In the Wake of Poseidon, catalog number Atlantic SD 8266.
I conservatively grade the cover VG+ instead of higher due to a faint but noticeable sticker removal stain/tiny tear in the upper right hand corner of the front cover, and faint but noticeable beginnings of dinging to the corners and spine. However, spine is flat and all spine text is undamaged and readable. The soft, textured cardboard stock that Atlantic used around this time on albums such as this and the first CSN album is easily damaged, but other than the defects noted, both the front and back covers are in beautiful shape with no ringwear. The inner gatefold is also in beautiful shape. Circular orange “Promotional Copy – Not for Sale” sticker on front cover. My camera has a slight warping effect that makes pictures of square LP sleeves look slightly askew, but the sleeve itself is square.Record is a white label promo with machine-stamped -1A matrices on each side, i.e. the earliest possible first pressing matrices for this title. I grade the record NM- although there are faint but visible hairline sleeve removal marks. Otherwise, record is visually perfect, with no visible spindle markings on the label. Usually when you put the needle down in the lead-in groove of a record of this vintage, you hear a good bit of surface noise before the music kicks in, but this copy is about as quiet as it gets. I play-graded the entire record on my Rega RP-1 with Bias 2 cartridge, and, again, it plays about as perfectly as a record of this vintage is going to play, strong and clean, with faint hints of surface noise during the quieter passages, and the very occasional pop or click. Fantastic sonics overall, the sound of both the quieter acoustic passages and the louder Mellotron workouts is about as good as I’ve heard on any LP, and the loud passages do get loud indeed.
