King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard’s third album of 2021, “Butterfly 3000” sees the band playing close to the vest, without releasing any singles prior to the release date of June 11th. The artwork featured on the album is a lovely cross-eyed autostereogram by long-time collaborator Jason Galea which beautifully pairs with the mathematic music that is modular synthesis featured on the album.

Their 18th studio album, “Butterfly 3000” might be their most fearless leap into the unknown yet. It features a suite of ten songs that all began life as arpeggiated loops composed on modular synthesizers, before being fashioned into addictive, optimistic and utterly seductive dream-pop by the now six-piece. The album sounds simultaneously like nothing they’ve ever done before, and thoroughly, unmistakably Gizz, down to its climactic neon psych-a-tronic flourish. This is undoubtedly the most accessible and jubilant album of their career.

Staff Review:

Possibly King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard's most upbeat and danceable album, “Butterfly 3000” sees the band delve into the vast world of modular synthesis, MIDI sequences and loops. Refusing to let the global pandemic stop them, the sextet released their 18th album from home - possibly what drove them to this electronic exploration. 

“Butterfly 3000” sees King Gizz deliver something I think we can all appreciate: simple, upbeat, poppy and joyful music in a dull and trying time. The band have taken their classic indie psych rock sound to a lighter, more melodic territory through fun arpeggios, playful loops and major keys. The albums melodies are distinct and dream-like, often reminiscent of 80s synth music.

Though the focus on electronic music is certainly present, there is still a lot of familiarity here. Undoubtedly the product of King Gizz's infectious psychedelia, the guitar riffs are hypnotically catchy, the vocal contributions float effortlessly over beautiful harmonies, smart melodies sit over driving basslines and each song is supported by the tight, rhythmic percussion.

Bold and refreshing, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard continue to venture into new areas on “Butterfly 3000” without losing their distinctive sound. It might take a few listens for the new sound to feel at home, however, once settled this album will have you joyfully bobbing along to its infectious poppy, electronic, psychedelic rock.
