This beautiful and rare LP – a superb collector’s copy – from French Columbia (FCX 540, French pressing, blue/silver label, mono – no stereo edition exists, havey “baguette”-style jacket, dowel spine) features Leonid Kogan's radiantly pure Bach album, recorded for Columbia on 25 November 1955 in the fabled acoustics of Kingsway Hall, London.

In the concertante works, Kogan was accompanied in exemplary fashion by the veteran Otto Ackermann, leading Walter Legge's Philharmonia Orchestra, at that time perhaps the finest in Europe.

Concerto for Violin in E Major BWV 1042

Concerto for Two Violins in D minor BWV 1043 (with Elizaveta Gilels, violinist)

Sarabande from the Partita for Solo Violin No. 1 in B minor BWV 1002

There are few more beautiful Bach Violin Concerti records than this, with the intense communicativeness of Kogan's unmistakable timbre both breathtaking and unforgettable.

Happily, the artwork (by Atelier Cassandre, Paris) and production matches the quality of the performances.

Included is the 12-page booklet, so often missing from these issues – with superb liner notes on the music by Frederick Moore, printed in French only.

PLEASE NOTE:

Even with minimal packaging, this particular issue will weigh over 500 g. This means that outside of Europe the cost for shipping is about $22 USD, and that is just for standard airmail. Certified airmail (with a tracking number) costs $25 USD.

Those in doubt can visit the Spanish postal website (Correos.com), which is available in English. Although this listing states “free” shipping, it is not really free, of course. I have to pay for shipping like everyone else.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the heavy “baguette”-style jacket is near-MINT. There is minor corner wear, as well as mild discoloration, but really that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and extremely attractive – overall, a truly fine collector's copy.

The condition of the dowel spine is near-MINT. The gold lettering on the dowel is perfectly legible and there is only slight signs of aging to the sleeve – overall, a fine copy.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, this is a fine copy and the playback is quite superb. If you must have flawless or NM surfaces then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
