This handsome and elusive gatefold LP from Eurodisc (913049, LP pressed in Germany, jacket in France, gold label, stereo, “Quadraphonie”) preserves the legendary Leonid Kogan in a brilliant pairing of Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor Op. 64 with Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor Op. 26.
Both were recorded in celebration of Kogan's 50th birthday, taped at Berlin's Grunewald Cathedral from 13 to 15 November 1974. In both works he is accompanied by Lorin Maazel and the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra on resplendent form.
There are other recorded performances of Kogan in the Mendelssohn, both studio and 'live', but this remains his only surviving account in stereo. In the Bruch, there is but one other extant reading, made in 1981 with his son Pavel on the podium. Fine thought that is, this 1974 issue easily outclasses it, particularly in terms of Maazel's echt accompaniment.
These performances have never sounded better than here and well capture Kogan's distinctive timbre, the acoustics of Grunewald Cathedral providing a warm, rich ambience for what was clearly a special occasion.
No admirer of Kogan, of the art of the violin, or of Mendelssohn and Bruch's Concerti should miss this beautiful Eurodisc issue. Notes are in French and Italian – outstanding!
The memorable cover photo of Kogan was taken by Klaus Hennch. The interior panels of the gatefold jacket contain superlative liner notes (uncredited), printed in French only.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the gatefold jacket is near-MINT. There is minuscule wear at corners, but that is all. Otherwise, the album appears almost as new – a truly fine collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is similarly near-MINT and plays without defect – again, a lovely collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
