ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome and elusive LP from German Columbia (STE 91334, German pressing, white/gold label, stereo, original inner sleeve included) features Franz Konwitschny and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra’s glorious account of Max Reger’s Variations and Fugue on a Theme by JA Hiller Op. 100, sumptuously recorded at the Kongresshalle, Leipzig on 13 June 1961.
Of the Berlin Classics CD re-issue of this performance, the superb critic Jonathan Woolf wrote for MusicWeb-International: “The Hiller Variations are in Konwitschny’s very able hands. There’s wonderful élan to the Leipzig string playing as there is real delicacy and wind tracery in the second variation. The brass are resplendent but never selfish in the vivace of the fourth variation and the rhythm is energising indeed in the tenth. The concluding Fugue is here a real winner and this performance does it justice – ten minutes of expertly laid out fugal writing exceptionally well played by the Leipzig forces. If you’re partial at all to the old Keilberth recording you will like this one.”
Incidentally the lovely cover art reproduces a detail of “San Giorgio battezza i gentilli · Papagei · San Giorgio degil Schiavoni” by Vittore Carpaccio (1455-1526), held in Florence. On the reverse side of the jacket are printed excellent liner notes – in German and English – by Ekkehart Kroher.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is edgewear, particularly to the lower edge and at corners. There is also mild discoloration. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT and the playback is superb – overall, this rates as a truly fine collector's copy.
