Description

Original 1982 Reference Recordings audiophile pressing, RR-9, cut at 45rpm, a Prof Keith Johnson recording. The label on this copy reads Manufactured in Japan by JVC for Reference Recordings, the premium JVC pressing collectors seek out for its dead quiet surfaces. Gatefold jacket.

This is the Kronos Quartet's debut studio album, recorded in 1979 at St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco, featuring a collection of works all written for Kronos. The original lineup: David Harrington and John Sherba on violins, Hank Dutt on viola, Joan Jeanrenaud on cello. Ten short pieces bridging rock, jazz, country, and folk into string quartet form, from The Funky Chicken to Whatever Happened to the Hoodoo Meat Bucket. Before Kronos became the most famous new music ensemble in the world, this is where it started. 

Fanfare magazine called it one of the finest string quartet discs ever issued for imaging, transient accuracy, and timbre. Between the 45 rpm cut, the Keith Johnson engineering in a cathedral acoustic, and the JVC vinyl, this doubles as a demo disc for any system. 

Condition

Vinyl: Visually NM. Deep gloss on both sides, appears barely played. Black Reference labels clean.

Cover: NM minus. Gatefold is sharp and clean with only trace corner wear, housed in its protective outer sleeve. Interior spread with band photos and credits is bright.

Sleeve: Original rice paper style audiophile inner sleeve.
