Lev Mikhaylovich Pulver (Yiddish pronunciation: Leib Pulver, Yiddish: ???? ?????????, European spelling: Leo Pulver, Russian: ???????, ??? ??????????) , was a Russian-Jewish musician. He was born on the 18 December [O.S. 6 December] 1883 in Verkhnedneprovsk, near Yekaterinoslav (now Dnipropetrovsk), former Russian Empire (now Ukraine), and died on 18 March 1970 in Moscow, Russia. He was an offspring of a renowned klezmorim's family.
Pulver studied violin since early childhood,first with his father; later on, he studied with his brother-in-law, a disciple of Czech violinist Otakar Sevcik. Pulver graduated from St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he studied violin and composition under A.K. Lyadov. Initially,he was a violinist and composer in a wandering Ukrainian theatre-group. Later on, he was a symphonic concert-master and conductor, a founding member of the Stradivari Quartet. He was the Musical Director of the State Jewish Theatre in Moscow (the GOSET). Pulver was awarded the titles of People's Artist of RSFSR and Distinguished Arts Master of RSFSR.
David (or Dovid) Bergelson (??? ??????????) (August 12, 1884 – August 12, 1952) was a Yiddish language writer. Ukrainian-born, he lived for a time in Berlin, Germany. He moved back to the Soviet Union when Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany. He was ultimately executed during an antisemitic campaign against "rootless cosmopolitans".
Solomon Naumovich Rabinovich, better known under his pen name Sholem Aleichem (Yiddish and Hebrew: ???????????; Russian and Ukrainian: ??????-????????) (March 2 [O.S. February 18] 1859 – May 13, 1916), was a leading Yiddish author and playwright. The musical Fiddler on the Roof, based on his stories about Tevye the Dairyman, was the first commercially successful English-language stage production about Jewish life in Eastern Europe. (The Hebrew phrase "Shalom [or Sholem according to dialect] Aleichem" literally means "Peace be upon you", and is a greeting in traditional Hebrew and Yiddish, surviving in attenuated form in the modern Hebrew "Shalom" [Peace], the normal greeting in modern Israel).
