WAT ("War Against Terror","We Are Time") is Laibach's first new album in 7 years, since 1996s Jesus Christ Superstar.
12 tracks of proto-industrial indifference from the Slovenian collective. WAT is a new stylistic departure, moving into the digital zeitgeist. This does not sound like Nitzer Ebb, this does not sound like Rammstein, KMFDM or Skinny Puppy, it sounds like Laibach. Primitive drum machines pop and click behind Milan Fras' apocalyptic, determined growl, guttural voices and ethereal choirs drift in and out of the gloom, and vibrating synth lines slash between WAT's mechanistic beats, forming anti-melodies from torn shrapnel. "Achtung!," "Ende," and "Now You Will Pay" illustrate Laibach's point. "Tanz Mit Laibach" is a direct tribute to German industrial pioneers D.A.F.
Sleeker, more minimal but as direct and aggressive as ever, WAT intensifies Laibach's analysis of the traumatic relationships between music and power, art and ideology, life and death. Whatever the style, the paradoxes and contradictions of Laibach incite and frustrate enjoyment - this is no ordinary pop group.
