Gorgeous ACID FOLK PSYCH from SAN FRANCISCO?

LAMB tend to be remembered by most people only for their appearance on the Last Days of The Fillmore concert album, though they made these 3 little known LPs in 1970-71, the first on Bill Graham's FILLMORE RECORDS label and were quite an interesting group.

Not readily comparable to other acts on the San Francisco rock circuit, they played a sometimes delicate, often avant-garde blend of acid folk, jazz, folk, gospel, with Middle Eastern, Arabic and other Mediterranean influences. The dominant figure was singer Barbara Mauritz, whose bluesy and earthy vocals had considerable resonance, yet which could also traverse the band's frequently mystical, poetic lyrics with much delicacy and nuance. Reminiscent in spots of such varied artists as Tim Buckley, Judy Collins (in her art-song phase), David Ackles, and Savage Rose (in that band's most gospel-soaked period), their records were ultimately idiosyncratic enough to defy ready comparison to anyone. And they were, too, ultimately too inaccessible to the unsophisticated public to make much commercial impact, despite plenty of tracks of considerable power, beauty, and enigma.

Lamb were formed by the duo of Texan singer Mauritz and multi-instrumentalist (though primarily guitarist) Bob Swanson. The two (writing both separately and together) was responsible for the band's material. The band was filled out with various musicians, though Ed Bogas and Bill Atwood were long-time members. LAMB attracted some important attention in San Francisco when they opened for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young for a few nights at Winterland in November 1969. Impresario Bill Graham was very impressed and became their manager.

Their LPs featured a number of San Francisco area sidemen, including Jerry Garcia (credited on "Cross Between" LP), John McFee (from CLOVER), David Hayes (from THE YOUNGBLOODS), Bill Douglass, Mitch Howie, Mel Martin, Patrick Gleason and Vince Delgado.

Their debut album on the Fillmore label, A Sign of Change, produced by David Rubinson and engineered by Fred Catero, was perhaps their most uncompromising and experimental, relying largely on surreal jazz-folk acoustic arrangements and spotlighting Mauritz's impressive voice on impressionistic, dream-like lyrics. They moved over to Warner Bros (while retaining Rubinson and Catero in production/sound engineering capacities) for the follow-up, Cross Between, which moved toward slightly more recognizably rock arrangements and a more pronounced southern gospel feel on several tracks. Yet others were throwbacks to the first album in their obscure but enchanting poetic mysticism, sometimes owing more to a classical-influenced art song tradition than conventional pop music - tablas, cellos, violas and english horn would be side-by-side with electric keyboards, guitars, bass, percussion and drums.

Lamb went yet further toward gospel-rockish material on their third and final album, Bring Out the Sun, which was also their most truly electric rock outing (including MOOG synthesizer), though hardly mainstream overall, with a couple of tracks again giving vent to their more experimental jazz-folk-classical side.
